My must-haves for my hospital bag as a second time mum

Updated: Jan 21, 2024

As a second-time mum, preparing my hospital bag feels like a mix of experience and anticipation. I'm more focused on essentials, aiming for comfort and practicality this time around, considering what worked best before while adding a few new items based on lessons learned from my first delivery. Here's a breakdown of what I packed and was truly useful.

Click on links for my product recommendations.

Comfortable Clothing: Loose, comfy outfits for labor and post-delivery and socks. You may be staying for one night only or up to a few nights so best to pack for at least 2 days’ worth of clothing.

Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush and make up essentials if you want to look pretty for photos 😍

Medical Documents: ID and birth plan if you have one

Hygiene Products: Maternity pads, comfortable underwear (I use Incontinence Underwear, more below), breast pads, and nursing bras.

Incontinence Underwear: A real game-changer when my water broke at home, it continued to leak for hours, even after reaching the hospital. I used 3 before the leaking stopped, and it was what I wore during the initial days of heaviest postpartum bleeding. I use the Depend brand.

Snacks: Energy-boosting/my favourite snacks

Entertainment: Book, magazine, or device for downtime during labour. I was induced for my first baby and took about 24 hours from the time I checked into hospital to when I gave birth to baby so I had plenty of down time.

Phone Charger: To charge phone, duh. Or powerbank if you don't have a long charger cable.

Baby's Essentials: 5 x outfit (onesies are the best), swaddle cloth, 10 nappies (I find ALDI brand nappies the best!), wet wipes (I love the Curash fragrance-free and used it for both my babies as they have sensitive skin), bibs, car seat for the ride home.

Supportive Shoes: Slippers or comfortable shoes for walking around the hospital.

Baby feeding essential: Milk bottle, 2-3 formula sachets (just in case you have difficulty breastfeeding). I personally use the Aptamil formula in sachet. I didn't want to get a whole tin of formula as I was planning on breastfeeding. It's cheaper to buy just the sachet to start with.

TENS Machine: offers natural pain relief during labor. I still end up asking for epidural but leading up to it, I was using TENS machine to distract my pain. I personally use the Elle brand for both my baby.

Good luck! xx
