How can I prevent my child from getting sick in child care?

Don’t take them to child care. 😜 But honestly, avoiding it entirely isn’t realistic. It’s almost inevitable for our children to catch something at daycare.

When my child began daycare around 2 years old, she seemed to catch something every two weeks for the first nine months. Most times, she passed it on to my husband and me as well. From common viral infections to stomach bugs, gastro, COVID, conjunctivitis—you name it, we’ve experienced it all!

While we can’t entirely prevent these infections, I’ve learned to minimize their impact and be prepared with medications and essential tools to make her feel better at home.

Check out my list of must-haves below!

Daily care:

Probiotics: Incorporating Lifespace into my child’s routine has noticeably strengthened her immune system. In hindsight, I should have introduced probiotics earlier, a lesson for my second child.

Vitamins: I alternate between Vitamin C alone and various multivitamins from different brands.

When my child is unwell:

Eukybear Vaporiser: Perfect for alleviating a runny nose and cough. The comforting Eucalyptus scent aids better sleep while gently clearing her nose.

Nose Frida: An essential for babies or kids who haven’t mastered blowing their nose.

Nasal Spray: Saline nasal sprays work wonders in breaking up mucus. It’s like magic; I witness the mucus dripping out within minutes after use.

Vicks Balsam: Though I’m unsure of its effectiveness, I prefer not to leave any stone unturned.

Antihistamine: Helps with fake colds or cases of mistaken hay fever. It’s useful for any kind of runny nose.

Panadol: Our go-to for pain relief. Sometimes, when our child coughs a lot but hasn’t taken any other medication yet, Panadol serves as interim relief until we visit a doctor.

Hydralyte: Lemon-flavored Hydralyte comes in handy during vomiting or diarrhoea episodes.

Endless cuddles and kisses: The best medicine of all!

Amidst focusing on our child’s well-being during sickness, we often forget self-care.

Despite the fatigue, remember to be gentle with your mental health. Trust that this phase will pass. You’ve got this, mum and dad!
